Interview with Felix Pfäffli
Founder of Studio Feixen

When did you start Studio Feixen? And where did the inspiration/ motivation come from to create something on your own?

There wasn’t a big plan behind it. It just happened. In fact, it could have easily turned out differently. Shortly before founding the studio in 2009, a year before graduating, I took a break from my graphic design studies. I wasn’t sure if it was the right path for me and decided to take a year off. After three months of sabbatical in a remote house at the end of the world in Sweden, I returned to Switzerland and became very communicative. During this time, I started numerous projects with different cultural institutions and bands. By the time I graduated a year later, I was already working full-time and decided to start my own studio.

Feixen does graphic design, interior design, fashion design, type design and animations as well. Where does all this knowledge and expertise come from? It's very unusual that a studio offers that wide variety of things.

Yes, I still remember when I started, everyone told me to specialize. I probably did the exact opposite – as many different things as possible. The less I know about something, the better. A few years ago, for example, we opened our own pizzeria with some friends – it just felt like the right thing to do at the time. Today, people say it serves the best pizza in all of Central Switzerland. Or just recently, I published my first piece of furniture, the “Crocodile Chair,” and I’m already working on a new design – all without any formal training or experience in this area. I’m self-taught. I love learning new things. And Studio Feixen is built on that very idea. We primarily do things that interest us. I am absolutely convinced that only genuine interest can lead to truly great work.

What role does art play in your life? How does it influence or reflect your personal experiences and perspectives?

A very important one. Since I was a small child, trips to art museums have been part of my weekend routine. These spaces feel like home to me. And of course, they also serve as an extremely valuable reservoir of inspiration. I love looking at art and imagining the thoughts behind it. Somehow, it motivates and inspires me.

Can you tell us a bit more about this pattern design you created for this collaboration? Does it have any specific meaning to you?

For this design, I tried to connect two worlds that are both very close to me: the world of art, the white cube, and the world of street art, the street. I tried to stay as much in the middle as possible. I’m fascinated by these in-between spaces. It’s a pattern full of contrasts and formal explorations. Sometimes, a shape might remind you of the outline of graffiti, while another may evoke sculptural works from a museum.
